I don't think I've ever encountered a common practical programming situation where I wanted null-termination as the convention for strings.

I dunno, I like Rust's "&str is always UTF-8" convention (ofc. can manipulate raw bytes &[u8])

(tradeoff: [u8]->str pays validation cost, but str APIs may safely assume UTF-8)
