I don't think I've ever encountered a common practical programming situation where I wanted null-termination as the convention for strings.
Wholeheartedly agree. And, like, the lack of that in 99% of web standards is telling :/

Also, this is totally compatible with "self-describing data", i.e. embedded descriptor.

Self-describing data just becomes one way to initialize pointer + descriptor pair.
