So awesome: Microsoft's "performance tidbits" got 50% of their "incontrovertible facts" about x64 wrong :(pic.twitter.com/Ukc9x7GYdb
I'm worried that the baby thinks people can't change.

@cmuratori I've written about this at length. To observe all you do is run code that's bigger than cache, but doesn't page.
@ricomariani I think you don't understand the difference between a fact and an example.
@cmuratori @ricomariani Stating that it is a "fact" that the same algorithm gets bigger in 64-bit compared to 32-bit means it's always true.
@cmuratori @ricomariani This is obviously false, if you think about it even cursorily.
@cmuratori @ricomariani It is not difficult to construct a register-dependent algorithm that is bigger in x86 than in x64.
@cmuratori I could write, most programs ported most of the time mostly get somewhat bigger except sometimes. This would be very tedious.
@ricomariani Or you could write the truth, which is that well-written programs get slightly larger and slightly faster in 64-bit.
@cmuratori @ricomariani And that poorly-written programs don't matter because _they already sucked_. Like Visual Studio.
@cmuratori @ricomariani That's the real defense of 32-bit VS. "Who cares? The performance would still suck in 64-bit!"
@cmuratori @ricomariani When something takes multiple _seconds_ to step over a line of code, 10% perf either way ain't gonna matter.
@cmuratori @ricomariani The core argument is so broken anyway. Sure it'd be nice if VS would work in 32bits *BUT IT DOESN'T* so fuck theory.
@dotstdy @cmuratori That's a much stronger point. But my answer to that in 2009 was "this stuff needs to be hella smaller"
