I really don't feel it is appropriate to use the term "lock free" to refer to an algorithm that requires locked instructions.

@rygorous "Lock free" should be reserved for algorithms which do not require locking at any level, including the CPU core / caches. -
@cmuratori Additionally, I've seen many "Lock-free" or "non-blocking" algorithms that use malloc, which is usually blocking. - Show replies
