@cmuratori GPUs need to just have an architecture spec like x64 that they run so we can just stop with all the API and driver bullshit.

@cmuratori nowadays, the vast majority of CPUs in personal computing devices don't support x64 asm, even. - Show replies

@cmuratori does this work for gpus? They aren't exactly analogous to CPUs. highly flexible pipeline vs fix function sequential execution. -
@katanadash Sure. Intel's LRB was actually one of these that was x64, even! But that is not necessary, it can be a new architecture spec. - Show replies

@Tuplet@Jonathan_Blow That is a rationalization, and also (incorrectly IMO) prioritizes "innovation" over stability, efficiency, etc. - Show replies

@AndrewLauritzen Well, first of all, you get a ton of performance _back_ for getting rid of the driver - note DX12 vs. DX11 for example. -
@AndrewLauritzen 2nd, I would trade quite a bit of performance for a stable GPU ISA. Stability and compatibility are today's big problems. - Show replies

@AndrewLauritzen@tom_forsyth Well we can start with that then :) Intel's actually in a great position to just ISA-fy everything, really. -
@AndrewLauritzen@tom_forsyth Because they ship a lot of unified parts and art not about "this is the fastest part", they have more room. - Show replies
