Is there a (crypto) explanation somewhere about why TrueCrypt uses a key encrypted with the s+pwd, rather than just the s+pwd?
@rygorous So specifically what I wanted to know is if there is an actual explanation of why (a) is true? (ie., what is the attack)

@cmuratori Known plaintext plus limited key entropy = greatly reduced search space. -
@rygorous That is not sufficient because it is true of the header as well - so there's no advantage. It has to be _amount_ of plaintext... - Show replies

@cmuratori Generally, cryptographic attacks try to find key such that messages decrypt to "non-random-looking" data.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@cmuratori Need to define this precisely: say, you find a binary property X such that P(X) > 0.5 for a given cipher. That's a crypto. break.Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
