You can like a game but you cannot respect a game, you respect the man or persons standing behind the game. I think it's all about respecting one's opinion about something which might be in contradictory about the mainstream opinion.

I don't have to respect anyone's opinion about anything. I especially do not respect Jon's use of his platform to argue against vaccination. Even if it was a lab leak, convincing people to not get vaccinated isn't the right take. Too many people have died and are going to die.

Okay, I did not argue against vaccination, though.

You know what, you're right. That was my interpretation of your tweets on the matter. I just, dunno, feel like feeding into theories like it being a lab leak is a bad use of your platform. It's not that there isn't a possibility of that. It's more so that antivaxxers are (1)

using that theory to support their beliefs, which are causing great harm. I don't think everyone seeing your stance on these things can use nuance to deduce that you're not promoting anti-vax idealogy (I couldn't), so I feel it's doing more harm than good. (2)

The problem, though, is that this is the fault of "your side" of the argument, not Jon's. If scientists primary position this entire time had been, "This may well have come from a lab, we don't know yet; and the vaccine is very effective" then there would be no confusion.

The scientific establishment incorrectly claimed the origin was a scientifically settled matter, which it never was, and thereby lost credibility. They are the ones to blame for their loss of credibility, not people (correctly) stating a lab origin is probable.

And for what it's worth, I think it's actually very important that they be blamed for this, because we do need a credible scientific establishment to do things like validate vaccines for the public, and the best way to restore credibility is for there to be obvious consequences.

Making an example out of people who made knowingly erroneous statements about COVID origins would go a long way toward restoring public trust that the scientific community isn't just a mouthpiece, and that it actually punishes actors who propagandize.

Obviously you will never get 100% of the people to trust you, but you don't need to. Getting to 80% or 90% actually wouldn't be that hard if the scientific establishment were overhauled to start only stating things that they actually know, instead of just their opinions.
