[1/*] Using Twitter has put reading comprehension into a very different perspective for me. I used to think reading comprehension tests were silly when I was in grade school, because they seem so easy. But I guess I took for granted the skill of understanding a paragraph of text.

[2/*] The reason I thought they were silly is because they seemed so much easier than the other things that we were asked to do at a similar time. For example, solving a quadratic equation seems dramatically more difficult than understanding a simple paragraph.

[3/*] But lately it seems like people cannot read even one or two sentences and correctly build a model in their head of what is being said, never mind able to read, say, an article or a source document.

But does the fault occur in the transmission, in the reception or is it a combination of both?

It's just reading and memory, AFAICT. People just kind of reduce things down to extremely simple models that are totally incorrect, like in the example I give in this thread where there were two grant proposals, but people think there was only one.

I don't think anyone cares about the grant proposals tbh. The media narrative looks like NIH funds lab, lab creates gain of function == NIH funds gain of function. This looks to me like deliberate misinterpretation for political leverage against Fauci.

Except most of the misinterpretation I saw went the other way. It was people saying that the "grant wasn't funded" so it didn't matter, not realizing that the recent disclosures were from a grant that _was_ funded, because they don't realize there was more than one grant :(

I guess that's the people defending Fauci by pretending they don't understand what the people attacking Fauci are saying :P
