[1/*] Using Twitter has put reading comprehension into a very different perspective for me. I used to think reading comprehension tests were silly when I was in grade school, because they seem so easy. But I guess I took for granted the skill of understanding a paragraph of text.

There has been an extreme drop in the span people can hold attention. Brains are scanning for small chunks to share on the socials (and take offense at). Having a max char limit on Twitter, a max time limit on Tiktok, Insta, etc. accommodates this. Deep thought is discouraged.

I do worry a lot about this. I think it is much worse than people think :(

Those people cherry pick (incorrectly!) whatever it is that backs up their position. There is zero interest to understand the details. They get what they want and amplify. Unfortunately undoing the damage is almost impossible.

I find that people are generally more interested in validating their feelings about the world than in absorbing information. Even if not acting in bad faith, that can often lead to misreadings, since most of us are looking for confirmation, not information.

I suspect the culprit here is that it's not a straight reading comprehension. Even if people read the source material, they have already read an opinion/summary/secondary/further removed media about it and it generates some assumptions about the source. Like a game of Telephone.

You _almost_ arrived at a well studied Cog. Psych phenomenon. Almost. Although I have wondered if better reading comprehension would alleviate that phenomenon. I suspect it might.

There's a concept in psychology called "The magic number 7 plus or minus two" that makes an observation about how many ideas a person can manage mentally. But to me, social media has exposed that this is probably peak performance; many people seem unable to manage 2.

Two grant proposals?! Now you've just gone too far, sir.

In all seriousness though, I read a piece from the Telegraph [1] and only came out with the idea that there was a single proposal to DARPA by a US org. Please tell me it is not obvious that there is a 2nd, funded proposal mentioned in that article.

So that article seems to require a login, so I don't know, but it is entirely possible that the author never mentions the other grant. You can read the other grant, and the progress reports, on-line since the Intercept FOIA'd them (unlike the DARPA grant, which was a "leak")
