Calling them a small indie company, even as a joke, would be so ironic that it hurts

and all that unpaid labour for speakers, it’s the same scam as academic publishers
-
Yes. It is one of the reasons I am very proud that our industry seems to be moving to a live stream / VOD / developer-to-developer education model. I hope conferences like this one will be ended in my lifetime as the obsolete concepts that they are.

do they at least pay speakers? Because that's always why I thought the ticket price was so high.
-
They used to pay specific keynote speakers, although they kept it secret so no one would know, since the other 95% of the speakers were uncompensated in any way other than "getting in for free". And no I'm not kidding.

There's only two excerpts on YouTube a bit over 2mins each: https://youtu.be/G2OE-74bTQw Your point is still very much relevant. there's a bit of a history of how those two excerpts and full audio came to be:https://www.gamedeveloper.com/console/the-gdc-25-chronicles-a-i-quake-i-aftershock …

I wanted to watch an old video on http://GDCVault.com , and I couldn't believe a yearly subscription is $550
-
When game developer magazine shut down they gave those of us with active subscriptions a few months of GDCVault access. I spent the time making a tool to scrape the videos from the site. I think it was about 600 gigs in the end

IIRC, I paid for cassette tapes of individual talks from around 2001, distributed by a third party. Chances are, they're still around, somewhere.
-
Would be nice if they could be uploaded to youtube!
