That way, you know that nobody will ever overwrite _that_ memory buffer until you _reissue_ it back into the queue, thus preserving the lifetime on the side of the queue that cares.

I am not sure what 'the queue' is referring to here. However, in this program, data read out of the buffer is not held long term, as far as I know, so I don't think validity is a problem.
