@cmuratori hi, watching your excellent grass planting lecture. A thought hit me, can't you 'just' render all the surface triangles as a mesh with orthographic projection to get a height texture back?
So it doesn't make much sense to do this for editing unless you can't do the exact solution, which as I demonstrated, you can. Also, you could do this on the GPU - they are perfectly capable of rasterizing _into lists_ nowadays!

So you could "render" into a "texture", where the texture was a linked list of triangles, and then still recover the exact result in the same way. Or you could just write a CUDA program, etc.

Right. My thinking was, what's the tradeoff between quality of solution vs knowing as little as possible about the solution. Problem is reminiscent of nav meshes.
