Hmmm I see - though isnt it fair to treat the competition between forks as part of the consensus mechanism? Thus, the larger fork is the legitimate data, which remains immutable? There's another chain then, but it's either not competing for the same context, or not winning

"Consensus" is probably a bad word for these algorithms in this case - it's more akin to majority-rule. Though the current crop of PoW/PoS is "majority of computing power/money" rather than being tied to human identity and being properly democratic
