[1/*] Just to clarify, in the hopes of getting less lunacy in my mentions: I am a professional programmer. I have implemented novel hash functions before. I work on server code. I long ago read and completely understand the original BitCoin paper.

Sounds like an undertaking, I'd watch it all the way! Going to provide some resources if useful. So are you saying that you are familiar with why Bitcoin's Energy Usage would be justifiable but want to explore the technical detail around consensus? see:https://unchained.com/blog/bitcoin-does-not-waste-energy/ …

I actually think energy usage is not the most important thing to get straightened out. I want more convincing explanations of why BitCoin is a good idea even if it had no potentially negative environmental impacts.

The premise of Bitcoin is philosophical/economic, not technical. If you don't buy the philosophy to begin with, there is no way to see a "there" there. The underlying technology of "blockchain" is Bitcoin, not vice versa.https://twitter.com/QuotableSatoshi/status/1430002307060670465 …

This is a nonsense argument and if that is all that cryptocurrency has going for it, it is irrelevant, as I would easily demonstrate by hypotheticals. But my hope is that there is more to it than that.

There isn't more than that. It's not about technology, sir.

Then it is literally an irrelevant idea that will go nowhere. We already know what happens when you have a non-technology solution: you have the current financial system. That is the endgame. So either you have a technological way of preventing that, or this is all pointless.

The current financial system didn't magically appear. It's what happens over the long term automatically when you do not have any technological enforcement of what happens with numbers. So if the answer is "social effects", well guess what: those already didn't work.

So I expect a much more sophisticated answer than that, or crypto people really are as delusional as they sound.

Certainly many will try to convince you that the technology of "blockchain" + a cornucopia of cryptographic primitives are supreme. 2017 ICOs were all about selling that idea & many got very rich with vapour. But the basis is philosophical: hard, sound money and decentralisation.
