I actually think energy usage is not the most important thing to get straightened out. I want more convincing explanations of why BitCoin is a good idea even if it had no potentially negative environmental impacts.

ok, that's good to clarify. I think it will help in avoiding some misunderstanding. When you say "as opposed to less costly consensus protocols" and "cannot be substituted with weaker, cheaper protocols", could you give an example of what protocols you are referring to?
