So one thing I hadn't thought about before was that Apple's behavior is even more ridiculous than I originally considered. By force-taking 30%, they're basically ensuring that, for example, there will be a FortFone at some point.

A forked Android phone won’t have the Google Play store, or the Apple Store, so it is basically the same, unless you know how to sideload custom apps or bootstrap a 3rd party store that does not have all the software you want…….

Yes it does? At least my understanding was that Android forks can be "compatible" forks, meaning that they pass a compliant suite, and then they can just ship Google Play Store on them, in addition to whatever other stores they want.
