So one thing I hadn't thought about before was that Apple's behavior is even more ridiculous than I originally considered. By force-taking 30%, they're basically ensuring that, for example, there will be a FortFone at some point.

wouldn't that lead to massive fracturization (even moreso than exists already) of the Android phone market and software ecosystems? seems like a great long-term strat imo, keep themselves positioned as the One True Phone to make you not feel like a pleb for getting a FortPhone…
-
I don't see why? It's the same underlying hardware. I have a random Morotola Android phone and all the apps I use work just fine.

But it's already happening, you hace chinese phone for half the price, but they still buy iPhone because of tbeir name, build, camera (very big factor), speakers and a lot of other factors besides the apps, as the apps are basically everywhere and it doesn't matter which you buy.
-
But it won't be when they pull their apps from iPhone, or offer 30% discounts on their phone.

The same reason no one has run Linux instead of Windows the last 20 years.
-
Except it's the opposite? They run Windows because that's where their software is. Android would be where the software is. It's not comparable to the Windows/Linux dichotomy.

Apple positioned themselves as the only luxury electronic device. Everyone else just makes pleb phones.

2008 wants it's argument back. We're 13 years on, and the knock-off iPhone are not only available but by number are more numerous. Yet the iPhone still makes Apple one of the most profitable companies in the world.

Too much risk is my guess. It would take heavy investment by would-be competitors that Apple could simply undercut at a moments notice, simply by changing their rules.
