Like they are sort of daring everyone to come and ship phones that compete with them. Maybe that's fine short-term, but I hadn't considered just how bad that is for their long-term business. People buy phones for the big apps on them, and those devs are now very incentivized...

Since basically everyone can fork Android and ship a knock-off phone if they want to (and tons of people do), I mean, that's just going to happen. Why wouldn't it?

Amazon, Facebook and Sony all had phones with their own ecosystem and abandoned the idea. This approach requires more hardware innovation to succeed

Those were attempts at their _own_ phone, though, which I agree doesn't make much sense. I'm talking about simply branding a phone. For example, SAMSUNG and Epic just sign a deal to ship the FortFone. I think this would work very well.
