The first time it happened, I thought the machine just died. But later, after it had remained unplugged from the wall for a long time, I happened to plug it back in to double check, and it turned on immediately.

I would try disabling fast startup if you haven't already. My guess is it's stuck in hibernation mode I've certainly seen that issue before.

I had the exact same problem and it was caused by hibernation. I had freaked at first time because it was my main dev machine. Fortunately I had unplugged power supply and boom
it's started working again ... until the next time I accidentally selected "Sleep" again. - Show replies

I thiiiink I had the same at work a few times. The culprit was always the silly battery on the motherboard. Took it out for a few minutes, put it back in and PC booted up just fine.

I have a box that would behave like this. For some reason pulling out a ram stick and sticking it in again made it boot again for exactly one time. What helped in my place was upgrading the firmware and changing from UEFI boot to "let's pretend I'm a bios"-mode.

A friend has the same problem. Windows suddenly refused to boot. We even tried reinstalling windows. Still remains stuck after the bios screen. We switched to linux, which boots, but hangs randomly. I’m basically out of ideas, except buying new hardware. Which is not an option.

If someone has an idea on what we could try, I would really appreciate it.

This is so sad if it is an hybernation issue as everyone suggest. I found really useful to get my applications restore their states at startup.
