The first issue of WebAssembly is that it is called Assembly. It is neither possible nor desirable for this language to be Assembly, but that has not stopped people trying to make it Assembly. So we end up with Cargo Cult Assembly, a lot of the downsides, but none of the upsides.https://twitter.com/cmuratori/status/1441137235848351748 …

One of the Unity developers raised some important points about WASM's memory model in a github thread. I contributed some additional thoughts here: https://github.com/WebAssembly/design/issues/1397#issuecomment-926119051 …

Well, it's what the browser runs, so we have to make the best of it. It is a better start than current JavaScript! The decision to use 32-bit pointers and a 32-bit address space seems like a very bad decision, but maybe it makes more sense from the perspective of phones and such.

(I'm fine with _allowing_ 32-bit pointers, of course, but _requiring_ 32-bit pointers basically removes the entire power of the processor's page tables / TLB, which results in substantial performance penalties in lots of code paths...)

I think it went off the rails the moment they decided that pointer bittyness should be specified by the language. Take C, remove the ability to cast and sizeof stuff with pointers, plus a few other changes to make pointer arithmetic obsolete.
