It was disheartening reading through the list of "software tech" people replied to @Jonathan_Blow claiming they were invented "after the 90s". Almost all of them weren't. People saying things like PAXOS (1988 thru 1998) and race detectors (multiple in the 1990s), etc.

Finding and reading scientific papers is an essential skill that should be tought and encouraged in high school imo. Meanwhile when I was getting a CS degree none of the original publications were ever read as part of any course.

While I agree, I think you need a certain level of familiarity with the subject matter to effectively find papers. It’s hard to search for something you’ve never heard of. I had the same experience in my CS degree. In retrospect it’s amazing how little I learned.
