It was disheartening reading through the list of "software tech" people replied to @Jonathan_Blow claiming they were invented "after the 90s". Almost all of them weren't. People saying things like PAXOS (1988 thru 1998) and race detectors (multiple in the 1990s), etc.

I think perhaps the more valuable thing to ask is, how do you teach people to read CS documents? Like how do you convince people they should do a search for PAXOS and look at the original paper(s) before assuming they know something, like when it was made, or what it entails?

At least for myself, I read literally hundreds of these things, and it's a major reason I find out about stuff. Crawling citations forwards and backwards is a really important skill everyone should employ frequently.
