(The reason I assume there is 10x left, BTW, is because 1.4mb/sec is around 12,000 cycles per character of source on the machine you listed, if I'm doing the math right?)

No, no AVX. Most of the time is spent creating and filling in all of the data structures, so the optimisations so far have been removal of allocs, caching and improving hashmap usage etc.
