Retweeting purely so that people know I'm not crazy when I keep saying that one of the biggest problems with Linux is that the debugging tools are significantly worse than on Windows (where they are already not that great).https://twitter.com/basisspace/status/1438678322620239873 …

I know I shouldn’t really expect better, but it is 2021 and debugging on Linux is basically unchanged since 1998–it sucks. Especially for commercial software where you don’t want to ship your symbols to everyone.

You've always despised the Apple eco-system, maybe time to take a look and see if it meets your expectations?

Do you mean X-code? It's a gigantic pile of shit.

Not disagreeing, but everyone I know using its debug tools seems to be satisfied with them, at least when it comes to iOS development. Every time I have to use XCode I'm glad I don't have to make a living doing that 😬

Everyone you know must have very low standards for debugging tools :)

They're good iOS developers, might be that it suits their needs for single platform development 🤷🏻‍♂️

@fast_code_r_us what's your take on XCode's debugging tools? I've seen you use the profiler for demonstration purposes but how about other tools? XCode seems to be something you're using often these days

I haven't used Windows in years, so I can't comment on Visual Studio, but I really like Xcode+Instruments for debugging and profiling. For my work it's essential for optimizing Arm code (and occasionally x86). Linux (GDB + VSCode) isn't bad for debugging, but profiling sucks.

If you don't yet know @cmuratori check out his work. He's a mastermind, also had a really funny podcast but haven't seen new episodes for over a year. The two of you sure have a lot of shared knowledge and experience

COVID / Jeff's schedule made it a lot less likely for us to record the podcast. I did build a home studio recently though, so maybe someday we'll get back to it :)
