It is strange to hear the phrase, "private corporations can do what they want" in 2021. That has not been the case for over a century now, and is shockingly ignorant of the fact that the world imposes literally tens of thousands of regulations on private corporations already.

Standard feature in any freedom of speech debate is people keep circling back to what 1st amandman does or doesn't cover. A unique feature of American political deadlock. You can't even imagine changing the rules, just lawyering your way around them, like they are set in stone.

I generally agree with what you're saying but surely in this case the onus would be on the side imposing the restriction, so one would have to argue why they shouldn't have the right to censor, no?
-
I don't see why? Corporations already receive absurd exemptions from laws the rest of us have to follow. They are exempt from copyright law under the DMCA, they are exempt from liability law under Section 230, etc.

I don’t think private corporations have the right to “censor”. I think they have the right to control what content they host on the servers and databases that they own / pay for. One, it impacts their customers’ experience with their product & influences their brand image.
-
Two, taking that right away from them is a direct violation of the platform provider’s 1st amendment freedom of association, far more than getting banned is a violation of the user’s 1st amendment freedom of speech.

I usually look at it from the other end of the telescope - what would those companies be forced to do if they couldn't censor? Perhaps they'd be forced to platform conspiracy theorists, people who push ivermectin as an effective treatment for Covid, etc.
-
Do you also ask that question of all the other companies that serve "people who push ivermectin", etc.? The power company, the bank that holds their money, the grocery store that sells them food, etc.?

Would you support Taliban having free reign on social media platforms?
-
Of course? I support everyone having free reign on social media platforms, and I find it at least a little bit strange that someone would think the ruling government of an entire country wouldn't be allowed to post on social media.

I think there's a fundamental flaw in your implicit question; it's not a question of whether or not they can censor but whether or not they can choose who to platform. No one has a right to censor, but everyone -corporations included- have a right to not spread their ideas
-
But again, that's just stating an outcome. There's no argument contained in saying "everyone has a right to", it's just a statement.
