"Payment processing" should be declared common carrier. Period. Like, yesterday. People who process transactions should be given literally no authority to do anything other than impose fees proportional to the card fraud rate for the merchant.pic.twitter.com/87yJyxGzGH

(BTW, the excerpt is from a blog post by @stripe explaining why they could not provide merchant services to OMGYes)

agreed, but how does one successfully counter-argue "but this means Stormfront or whatever can put a Stripe logo on their website and use it to accept payments, and that's bad and wrong!"?

I guess I'm not sure what the argument is there. Do you look at all the other services that Stormfront uses? Is ICANN responsible for what they do? Is the W3C? Is Google, because you browsed there using Chrome? How about Microsoft, because you were using Windows at the time?

It is surprising that payment processors *still* do this even though cryptocurrencies are becoming more viable over time.

I assume, though, it is because they know crypto isn't really a threat. Once crypto is viable enough, the providers for crypto will do exactly the same thing - have all kinds of restrictions for using them, and we'll be back to square one.

Your method of increasing our freedoms through a government that enforces them is kind of weird. The freedom to act should be in the hands of the provider, not an all mighty government that tells us all what to do. Enforced freedom is not freedom.

Disagree with parts of this. Government needs to intervene when one freedom interferes with another

crypto currency could solve a part of this, but since a lot of use of crypto is illicit, payment processors block crypto to fiat exchange instead. I think it just moves the goalpost.
