about once a decade i get this morbid curiosity to install some relatively vanilla linux distro on my windows desktop (as opposed to WSL or remote AWS boxes, where i normally encounter it). i feel it rising again… should i cave… or will i accidentally reformat my hdd/waste days

I'm not saying you haven't had problems with it, I have ran into countless ones with Windows, but to say I'm simply "wrong" when I've used it for so many years with relative ease is a bit silly

Well the relative part is the problem. relative to "solid" you're wrong. Relative to what linux used to be like, maybe.

All day every day for work and home user (except when I want to fire up the VR), I find the *bunto distros install pretty reliably but every so often (like twice a year) you'll install something or just do an update and it's brick city, and a day of pain to recover or reinstall.
