Razer, you are not qualified to ship root-level software. I knew it. You should have known it. Yet you insist, even after incontrovertible _proof_ you are unqualified, to put nagware installers on Windows machines to further exacerbate the problem.

I _would_ say something like, "folks, never buy Razer hardware", but unfortunately, at least if I understood the latest exploit correctly, their QA is so bad that their mice can root your machine _even if you never installed a driver as admin_!

Why does Microsoft allow auto-installation and running of non-driver software on Windows when you plug in a USB device? Seems completely insane and I haven't seen anyone but Razer do it.
-
I have no idea. Windows is legendary for USB exploits, so it's not like this is the first hint they've gotten that maybe something's wrong.

Jon had tried a Razer keyboard on one of his past livestreams before. It was already obnoxious enough to have to install 180MB+ worth of components, then having to log in to change settings. Even a Windows 10/11 UWP app from the MS Store would be more appreciated.

Is that the stream where he throws it on the ground? Because I loved that one.

Yep haven’t bought a razer product in a long time for that reason.

I remember reading white hats outing exploits a while ago, using Razer as an example. Maybe
@MalwareTechBlog had an article? Not sure. Peripheral vendors pushing crappy resident software is a terrible policy, all you need is a FW programmer.@UltHackKeyboard gets it right. -
Separately, do we even need a driver for a keyboard anymore? I feel like using HID for n-key rollover may have been too complicated when it first came out, but nowadays, when your refrigerator runs Linux, I can't imagine a keyboard controller couldn't "just work" with base HID?

Back when I was in the market for a new gaming keyboard and mouse, I was 100% going to go with Razer (due to being the main brand I was aware of), until I heard about the shady stuff they do with their drivers and peripheral apps. Ended up going with Corsair instead
