No, the argument is that literal Nazis didn't think they were figurative Nazis (as used in your description). They thought other people were figurative Nazis, and therefore had to be deplatformed. Which they did. And then much, much worse followed.

This might be the wildest take I've ever heard. You're starting from the premise that my definition of "nazi" wouldn't include literal actual historical nazis, whose goals you think started out as "de-platforming people" before going down the obvious slippery slope to genocide.

No, not that their goals started out as deplatforming. Their _actions_ started out as deplatforming. This is not uncommon for any regime that ends in genocide. Control of the narrative, by removing dissenting voices, is the first necessary step.

To me, a better example is Stalinism, because the people who made excuses for Stalinist oppression did so under the impression that these harsh methods were necessary to safeguard the *very real and tangible* progress made by the revolution. And they got the opposite.

And a lot of that was done under the threat of capitalism, foreign imperialism, and fascism. All real threats. But these powers were used to brutally crush Bolshevik dissent, establish a new ruling class, and ultimately dissolve the Soviet Union itself.

And I should note that these particular postmodern politics that have taken hold, despite people occasionally calling themselves socialists, are rabidly anticommunist. If you have a basic Marxist understanding of history, you are a "brocialist" racist sexist monster.

I guess I thankfully don't read Twitter enough to have heard the term "brocialist" - OMG :)

I was expelled from my early indie game circles for being both a brocialist and manarchist, which seems contradictory. Mind you it wasn't about any kind of social behaviour, but simply about believing in basic Marxist principles re: class & historical materialism.

Well I mean you can't expect to fit in when you espouse beliefs that are so obscure and extreme as Marxism. It's not like it was a foundational theory for multiple major societies encompassing a billion people or anything like that.

The funny/sad thing is that these people considered themselves radicals, very different from the previous generations, when in fact they were engaging in old-school American anticommunism just like the people they claimed to abhor, just using different language.

It has been very depressing to see people repeat all the same mistakes, but very educational to see how it works in real time.
