I won't tweet about this any further but I want to live in a society where reactionary and idiotic movements are defeated politically, not punished on the individual level until every moron becomes a martyr and the backlash undoes a century of progress. But YMMV.

To me, a better example is Stalinism, because the people who made excuses for Stalinist oppression did so under the impression that these harsh methods were necessary to safeguard the *very real and tangible* progress made by the revolution. And they got the opposite.

And a lot of that was done under the threat of capitalism, foreign imperialism, and fascism. All real threats. But these powers were used to brutally crush Bolshevik dissent, establish a new ruling class, and ultimately dissolve the Soviet Union itself.
