Are there any examples of people giving "talks" on twitch/youtube directly, versus giving a talk remotely at a virtual/remote conference? I'm realizing now that giving a talk in that way sounds pretty fun and easy to me, since i already have a lot of that infra built up

Yes, we do it all the time on Twitch. Example from me: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZRE7HIO3vk … (originally on http://twitch.tv/handmade_hero ), example from

this is really cool - thanks for sharing. have you started thinking about this any differently, or seen different behaviors, since COVID?

Not really. I don't see conferences or in-person presentations as being beneficial. I see them as mostly vestigial remains. Live-streaming opens up lecture content to the entire world, for very low cost. It seems a strictly egalitarian improvement, no COVID necessary.

yeah, i think i agree. I just wonder if COVID provided an acceleration towards this where more people are now thinking of it this way. I still miss in person conferences for the interactions that result, but am seeing much less value in remote conferences

The interactions now happen on
@discord, generally, since you usually have a discord linked to your Twitch. It's all terrible, of course, because these services are low-quality and designed around making money or increasing valuations, not around a vision of the future.1 reply 0 retweets 1 like
But one can easily see where it is headed, and fast forward 20 years, we will presumably have "virtual conferences" solved. It's janky right now but it will improve as new services that are purposefully designed enter the market.
