I thought this reply was a joke. Nope. That's really what they called the Moderna vaccine. WHAT IS GOING ONhttps://twitter.com/ihabunek/status/1430035707918229507 …

I mean, Moderna is the name of the company, right? So they can’t call every vaccine they produce “Moderna”, there’ll be confusion once they release the second one. It’s like if Nvidia would call every GPU they make “Nvidia”

1) Again, they should have thought of a name BEFORE they announced the vaccine to the world! It's too late to rename it. 2) Xerox made more than copiers, yet it's a Xerox machine. 3) this is a silly thread that I enjoy.

You forgot 4) Actually yes, nVidia does call every GPU they make "nVidia" as far as the public is concerned. Only pretty dedicated computer users know they have a "GTX 2080 Ti" or something. Most just know they have an "nVidia card", if they even know that.

Processors are another example. Hey John Doe, what kind of CPU do you have? No idea. Just "I have a PC", right? Maybe they know they have an "Intel" CPU. But if they do, they definitely don't know they have a "Core i7-7700k". _I_ don't even remember the model numbers!

So I could easily have seen a world where people merely said "I got the latest Pfizer vaccine" or "I got the latest Moderna vaccine" much more like "I got the latest nVidia card", much moreso than "I remembered the weird-ass trade name of this particular booster".

It’s about the entropy of a statement in a given context. If a company only has released one well-known product (like Moderna), the company’s name provides enough information. But if you go to the store to buy the latest Nvidia card, you’ll have to be specific about 3080 or 3070

Not to beat the dead horse, but even that seems unlikely. The vast majority of purchasers don't know what kind of nVidia card they're getting. It is often the salesperson that decides for them, or the OEM. It's much like the vaccine - the medical professional picks it.

This is already true in most vaccination scenarios. I don't know who made my last flu vaccine, or what its name was. I don't know who made the travel vaccines I last got for going abroad (hepatitis, tetanus, etc.?) It's rare that people know the brand name of a vaccine, I think.

In this case I think there was more awareness of these things because they were brand new, emergency authorized, and politicized. That's just not how it usually is. I doubt most people will know or care even whether a vaccine they get in the future is from Moderna or not.

A doctor will just tell them that they need a hepatitis vaccine for travel, and they'll get it. It will happen to be an mRNA vaccine from Moderna. They'll never know, nor care.
