Even politicians shouldn't be "vetted" this way. Well-functioning systems are ones where people are vetted for their relevant skills. All humans have differing perceptions of reality. Eh, I think people were just as petty back then, they just didn't have access to the info. There's very little historically to suggest people's expectations are getting stricter
