I'm finding myself bridling at a conference that has a non-negotiable slide template for speakers; am I being unreasonable?

Bryan, I absolutely love your talks and recommend them to everyone. You have the worst slides
Maybe think about using a template
But if it impacts your speaking style or talk in any way just say no and do your thing4 replies 0 retweets 15 likes -

I would definitely want to understand what makes my slides the worst! My two goals: I want my slides to stand somewhat on their own, and I want to be sure that anyone who finds it easier to read than listen (specifically, ESL folks) can get the essential content.

I appreciate the inclusion aspect but the slide content never do your talks justice. I feel like I've seen a slide exactly like this on every "don't do this with slides" article/training.pic.twitter.com/kFKopqkpLG

So honestly, what's the specific issue? Too many words? Not enough?

A good rule of thumb is that people can either read dense text on a slide, or listen to what you are saying, but not both. Typically you want slides to have information on them that you explain (charts, graphs, diagrams), not explanations on them that you repeat.

The idea is that you have a graphical processing center and a linguistic processing center in your brain, and your slides target the former while your voice targets the latter. If you target the linguistic center with both, you're at best redundant, and at worst confusing.

There's definitely value to having the "long form" writing that is shown on the slide above - but it should be in the notes to the slides that you publish with the slides, for people who can't hear the audio.

Finally, to weigh in on the original question, HELL NO you should not agree to use a slide template. Any conference that requires a slide template is just an immediate no. That's like requiring you to wear a certain outfit in order to present.
