It has not been particularly shocking to me, since I grew up watching people like Tipper Gore (and husband Al) enthusiastically support the PMRC, and I know the history of "progressive" figures like Fredric Wertham, whose quack "science" brought us decades of media censorship.

I was aware of that too (I have few illusions about bourgeois society), but I did not think it would spread *this* far, to the point where people openly disparage the very concept of free speech, and "leftists" consider free speech to be a sign of reaction. Madness.
