[8/*] If most people _wanted_ other people to be themselves and express themselves, our _mainstream_ media would have always reflected that! Why this was not obvious to me, I don't know.

[9/*] So this leads to obvious depressing conclusion: the more people engage in computing, the more it becomes just like mainstream media. Because if anything else were to be true, it would have already been true of the media that came before it :(

[10/*] So you don't have to wonder what the future of communication looks like! It looks just like the past. If books were banned, movies will be banned; if movies were banned, YouTubes will be banned.

[11/*] So computers didn't really offer anything different. The only thing they were was _new_. And something new has a brief period when the majority of people aren't using it, so their desire to force people to conform isn't applied.

[12/*] I'm not sure if that makes me more or less depressed. It's a depressing thought, but maybe also one that is slightly motivating: it means we can always make a new - albeit shortly lived - place free from the demands of social conformity.

[13/*] We just make a new medium for communication, and for a brief time, before it becomes popular, people will be able to be themselves there. The depressing part is, of course, that it will only last for a short while.

Well, you kinda have such internet. 4chan and darknet are mostly unmoderated, and, well, there is a lot of illegal, unethical or just gross stuff. And it's clear, why people want this stuff to be removed.

If it's illegal, it's a matter for the FBI. If it's "unethical" - well, who decided that? You? And if it's "just gross", then, don't look at it? Why would it matter if someone else is posting gross stuff on a Twitter feed? Just don't subscribe to that feed?

Well then why are you telling me this in highly moderated twitter, and not in anarchy-like 4chan (or other service)? BTW I'm not telling, that I agree with twitter decisions, but I'm just curious, why are you still using it

Because you are not on 4chan. That's the point. That was the entire point of my thread, if you read it? Once you get to the point where you can communicate with the majority of people, that platform will become regulated.

It can either be regulated by the platform itself, or the government will step in and do it, etc. But the only way to have actual free speech, AFAICT, is to not have anyone listening.

Another way to say this is, we could all move to 4chan right now and start talking to each other there. But if we did, I guarantee you it would become heavily moderated within a few years, by force if necessary.

It's not that 4chan is unmoderated so people don't go there. It's that people don't go there, so 4chan is unmoderated. It works the other way around.
