I understand why some people would be hesitant about large amounts of immigration right now, but come on, there is also a “you broke it, you bought it” principle in effect here.
Americans didn't break it. The US heads of state did. The US heads of state and their friends won't suffer. Ordinary americans will.

Remind me when was the last time a formal war declaration was issued, and when were the people last asked.
America doesn't have national referendums. "The people" are never asked about declarations of war. The AUMF was effectively a declaration of war, but since 9/11 was not a state actor, it was against "all groups" responsible. It was unanimous save for one vote (Barbara Lee).
"The people" were overwhelmingly in favor of the war in Afghanistan. Polls had it at 80% in favor. If we _did_ have national referendums on war, it would have passed in a landslide.https://news.gallup.com/poll/5029/eight-americans-support-ground-war-afghanistan.aspx …
