I would bet my life that the people of that old picture hold more progressive beliefs than those on the plane.

I mean, my ancestors' wave of immigrants brought us the Cosa Nostra, OK? There is nothing romantic about it. Immigrants often bring societal problems with them. That is a fact of life.
But the bottom line is that I'm here because my ancestors were allowed in. What kind of person would I be if I said that America should put up with all kinds of immigration problems for my ancestors, but not for anyone else?
