I mean, my ancestors' wave of immigrants brought us the Cosa Nostra, OK? There is nothing romantic about it. Immigrants often bring societal problems with them. That is a fact of life.
But the bottom line is that I'm here because my ancestors were allowed in. What kind of person would I be if I said that America should put up with all kinds of immigration problems for my ancestors, but not for anyone else?
Sadly, I feel as though many Italian-Americans have either forgotten this either entirely or selectively. Frequently I find many who are unable or unwilling to acknowledge parallels between anti-Italian sentiment of the 19th/20th century and today with many immigrant groups.
There is a lot of nuance here, to say the least but it's always sad to see such recent history thrown out the window entirely. I'd hoped we'd be more able and willing to sympathize considering what only one or two generations ago we had to go through.
