i think a large component is that most people have a weak concept of identity to begin with and the very idea of anonymity barely computes with them. a ship of theseus discussion might cause a full internal meltdown. so anyone not willing to identify the way they do must be ‘bad’

also helped that the early adopters were ultra nerds with strong philosophical concepts of things like ‘avatars’ as your total virtual presence and not just a jpeg or a character model. eternal september and all that. maybe there’s a global saturation point?
