In the early days, man believed in superstition because what else could explain what he did not understand. Then came science, and understanding. And man had no need for his superstitions anymore.

But somewhere along the line, man's science advanced to the point where he stopped trying to understand and just made it work. And now he no longer understands and had returned to his superstitions. Soon he will forget how to advance at all.

You're missing the point. They do this intentionally to non-Chrome browsers. So that way when you use Chrome you feel like things are fast. Just try YouTube in FF, compare the difference.

It doesn't even have to be intentional. Google devs run Google software. You don't fix problems in something you don't use all the time without conscious, intentional effort. I've seen people happy about ditching testing in chrome because vs code includes debug tools...
