so if theres a mythical person who did the research and came to the conclusion that they might want to wait for more data before getting the shot, and also take all the other precautions like mask wearing and avoiding crowds while waiting, then I wouldn't call that person dumb

If anything, medicine's "benchmarks" are much less rigorous, because they have untold numbers of variables they do not even know about, let alone control for, whereas the number of such things in most programming benchmarks is at least more finite.

I know benchmarks exist in general. I was not aware of UBM or BS directly using benchmarks as evidence of anything. I'm only aware of them giving high level abstract advice that isn't much looked in to, such as "use agile design" or "object oriented programs make reusable code".

We use them all the time to make decisions. "Should I use a Robin Hood hash or not? Should I use tombstones or not? Should this be a B-tree?"
