When did ZBrush and Blender come into the rotation, BTW? Are those new for this game or were they used on The Witness somewhere?

Zbrush we've been using even for the Witness a lot! We sculpted and decimated pretty much everything in there to get our look. Blender is more recent occasional thing we are trying, and will likely be used for the next project a lot more...it's just very good to work with.

Haven't been using Max in a long time! Wanna get away from Autodesk as much as possible in general now, though...they tried to bully us into doing a super intrusive random audit of all our machines...

We banned AutoDesk products at Molly Rocket from the outset because I have had such bad experiences with them in the past.

That's interesting. So what do you use for 3D animation? And Orsi, is that why the push for Blender? To eventually phase out Maya (since it's Autodesk too)?

(Can't speak for Thekla, but there are several studios including us where that is very specifically the reason to use Blender - not having to deal with AutoDesk :)

Dunno how much you use Blender personally, but it is a joy to use compared to the "industry standards". The low hanging fruit example is boot time. 3ds Max and Maya takes >minute to fully initialize while Blender is up and running in a few seconds(on my pc), like it should be.

For architectural modeling, it felt quite a ways behind 3DS MAX, IMO. That was 2.6 though, about 5 years ago, so they may have improved substantially since then.

They do have different workflows and some tools are more or less developed in each package. I can't speak directly to your experience, nor which one is best suited for what task at large scale. For me, it's things like how Blender allows far more use of the kb=>less mouse clicks

To be clear, we will still use Blender for our projects going forward either way. I would rather edit 3D models with Notepad than do business with AutoDesk ever again :) It does seem like Blender has good momentum now, too, so I suspect it will keep improving here, too.
