I guess I picked a good time to switch to our own server infrastructure and stop running our mailing list server out of a discount datacenter :)pic.twitter.com/GrZnm8ENov
I'm worried that the baby thinks people can't change.

Like that it's a terrible language with terrible performance?
It's not the best, but it's not terrible. Seems like you don't really know what you are talking about.
I know what I am talking about, and I have developed websites in PHP/MySQL before, and I can tell you with no uncertainty that it is a terrible language with terrible performance, _especially_ when you pair it with MySQL about which both things can also be said.
Do game developers use "commercial" RDB software much? I could imagine something like SQLite maybe being used in certain cases, but probably you just roll your own storage solutions for the primary data structures you need to manage? (More of a networked game problem I guess?)
Game engine internals don't tend to, but periphery does - like servers for metrics, matchmaking, or web stuff attached to games, etc.
That's what I figured. I guess they're conceptually pretty decent for metrics and such. Just a shame they all seem to be so slow. Doesn't really matter much though, when you're running a framework of around a couple million lines of PHP code anyways. That's my job :(
Personally, I don't think they are conceptually decent. I think people use them because it's not where game developers focus their attention, so they just use the same low-quality stuff that everyone else uses.
