[2/2] Pricing out one server provider, their _lowest_ horsepower machines ran from ~$60/mo for 86 cycles _per byte_ to ~$130/mo for 217 cycles per byte of traffic. Granted, HTTPS takes some of that away by being spectacularly awful, but still. 217 cycles for every single byte!

I don't think people rent dedicated servers though. They rent VPSes where the underlying CPU is being sold 2-5 times, and they get charged for bandwidth past a tiny amount per month instead of getting a specific size of pipe.

I am beating a dead horse here, but it's very popular to make your engineers do a bunch of extra work to divide up the work among a bunch of shitty VPSes (maybe call them something else like k8s pods or auto-scaling groups ok) instead of renting a single dedicated server
