We need better standard economic models for "free" software. Paying the creator of SumatraPDF a grand total of $100/month for his efforts is two orders of magnitude away from acceptable given how many people use it every day.https://twitter.com/msinilo/status/1419831948571197441 …

You can lead a Sumatrapdf author to water (friction, etc) but you can't make them drink: "Like I said: don't start open source project with intent to make money.". And good on him. I'm glad he's happy not making much money, having a soul whose price is higher than AdWords.

Well I am also glad he is happy, but it is a big problem economically speaking when places like Twitter are paying entire groups of engineers very high salaries to accomplish nothing or almost nothing, but someone who makes a de facto standard PDF reader makes $100/mo.

I don't disagree -- I'm just not seeing a problem I or you can address. If anyone's setting up an economic market, I do hope they talk to you first. I mean that sincerely - unlike Trip Hawkins, you actually do see farther.

I appreciate the confidence :) You will very excited to read my new book, "Advanced Market Design with Casey Muratori", coming in 2035.

Actually, I guess that is not the title of a non-fiction book. Non-fiction titles have to have massive subtitles. So maybe, "Advance Market Design: How Basic Misunderstandings About Natural Phenomenon Lead to Inefficient and Recurring Failures in Market Economies".
