IMO the root problem is not in the business model but in people's brains, sharing a fair percentage of the value gained from free stuff, especially from free _digital_ stuff, is just unthinkable for most. We need to wait for bad brains to be replaced by good brains.

That's what an economic model is. It's replacing bad behavior with good behavior by law. That's why we have economic systems. If everyone just did everything fairly all the time, you wouldn't need economic law at all.

Why not sell app on Steam or MS App Store? You don't need to download an app. Just give people more opportunities to pay, while still giving an option of free download from your page. One of the problems of donations is extra steps people need to make that is not in their habit.

A lot of this is just friction. If you could just push a button at the top of the program to pay $5 to unlock half the features, and this frictionlessly got paid kind of how things work on phones, lots of people would do it.

But like, diverting people to a web site that maybe doesn’t work, to enter credit card data that will get leaked eventually, badgering them to make an account, telling them 7 times their password is too insecure ... sucks and is stupid.
