I have a feeling c/c++ is not going to be a first class citizen on any platform soon either (assuming it even is now). Android - java. mac/ios - swift(?). Microsoft seems to prefer c#. Cross platform app development is done in javascript(!?) / electron, as crazy as that is.

Just saying this because vulkan seems to be in a similar situation - it tries to be available everywhere, it tries to be low level, but nothing really depends on it.

I haven't kept up with this space...why VK irrelevant on Windows? Is it just not worth using because DX is available? Is it implemented as a compatibility layer on top of DX, like it is with Metal on Mac?

Proton uses Vulkan

We know? The point is that since nobody will be calling it, they can just make a Proton driver in the future, and remove Vulkan entirely (which is presumably what would happen).

OpenGL is getting deprecated on iOS and macos, unless you want to learn metal and objective-c, vulkan with moltenvk is the only thing you have to make something that is portable to other platforms

And here I thought sticking to OpenGL on native Linux was just me lazily refusing to get with the times
