orwellian ministry of truth everyone insists will never happen in america — could not possibly ever happen, crazy people, no one is even asking for this, you actual looney tunes — now australian law, fyihttps://twitter.com/vishnusupreet/status/1416547691606290433 …

Where’s the “ministry of truth” part? This law seems to be about online harassment / cyber bullying, with an intent-to-harm qualifier that should limit overreach. While I’m not a fan of such laws, it seems different from what you represented.

(This was sort of an interjection to myself; I was starting to type something like, does this dude not read, does he not understand how laws work, then I saw there was a blue check next to your name, and I was like, ahh, okay, that explains it, move on.)

I was asking a question. I didn’t see anything about “truth.” What am I missing? It seems more like a “ministry of politeness.” Either way, I don’t support it. Courts w/ due process and presumption of innocence are the right way to prevent abuses that this law seems targeted at.

If this law does what you say, that would indeed be horrible law. By my read, it’s limited to content that was posted with *intent to cause serious harm to a particular person.* I don’t know if this is good law. It doesn’t seem to be a “ministry of truth.”

You're right: words like "serious harm" and "intent" give bureaucrats leeway when judging bullying complaints. Is that a ministry of truth? The 200pg law never says the word "truth." It's limited to content targeted at a specific person. Seems more like a ministry of civility. 🙂

I apologize for being the "Actually, it's Frankenstein's monster" guy, but the problem here is presumably that Mike just used the wrong ministry. This law would not be useful to the Ministry of Truth. It's a law that would be for the Ministry of Love.

          Replying to @cmuratori @apartovi and

But to Jon's larger point, that this law is a stepping stone to the Ministry of Love is fairly obvious, I should think. Ali's euphemism ("Ministry of Civility") is surely something Orwell would have loved, had he only thought of it :)
