Unfortunately for JavaScript fans, by far the slowest Windows terminal I've tested with termbench is hyper.js. It takes over seven minutes to run the small benchmark! refterm runs the same benchmark in less than half a second.pic.twitter.com/FjWe1M5U8p

That is to be expected to be honest, I'm not sure what you were hoping for. Now I wonder... Will you accept a challenge to make a javascript terminal that's faster than 1/100th of refterm's speed!? ;) (I can see this benefiting other js devs who work on similar things btw)

I'm pretty sure you'd need to WASM all the libraries he's using in refterm + port all the shaders to WebGL to come even remotely close. At that point you're basically not using JavaScript, and you'd lose all the "benefits" of a DOM based terminal... 😳

Refterm doesn't use any libraries. There's a single shader, and it's like 20 lines long.

Was referring to you're using for shaping / glyph generation. Since a big part of what makes you fast is caching glyphs and so on; and I imagine you'd want to totally bypass the DOM other things if you were to try to get any meaningful performance gain in this hypothetical. 🙂

Actually not. That's what makes refterm have a high FPS. The code that makes it fast at things like termbench is just that takes in data as quickly as possible. Ingress is the biggest limiting factor in terminal performance for termbench.

This is true even in refterm. If our VT-code parser was optimized, refterm could score way higher on the fg/bg tests.

Aha, right, wasn't really thinking of ingress here... and I probably should have been. Sorry about that, in fairness, I would imagine there's not much room for improvement there in hyper.js beyond forking electron. (Which could be a fun project if you're a masochist? ^^)

I mean, I certainly won't be looking into JS terminal performance :) But what I would say is that, for single-threaded performance, I really haven't found JS to be as slow as you would expect it to be from using JS applications :P
